What is free in Rockland (and what it does not cover)
Every Rockland town has some bulk pickup, and it is worth using when it fits: Clarkstown (New City, Nanuet, Congers, West Nyack, Valley Cottage, Bardonia): a monthly bulk pickup by your carter on your regular collection day, with a town fly-sheet each year listing the week; Orangetown (Pearl River, Orangeburg, Tappan, Blauvelt, Sparkill): your private sanitation company picks up four bulk items a month, placed curbside the evening before; Town of Haverstraw (Garnerville, Thiells): bulk and brush on Mondays, curbside before 7 a.m., with the Highway Department at (845) 429-9126; Village of West Haverstraw: bulk on Mondays; Stony Point: by appointment with the Highway Department, (845) 786-2300, pickups on Fridays; Ramapo villages and hamlets: schedules by route, see Rockland Green's pickup-schedule lookup. None of these take electronics, refrigerant appliances, tires, construction debris or hazardous materials, none carry anything out of the house, and all limit how much and how often. That gap is what junk removal fills.

What moves a Rockland quote up or down
- Volume is the main driver; sort and consolidate before the crew comes.
- Weight: tile, concrete, books, wet carpet and plaster cost more per load than furniture.
- Access: third-floor walk-ups, tight basement stairs and long carries add labor.
- Special items: refrigerant appliances, tires, pianos, hot tubs, e-waste.
- Timing: same-day and weekend pickups can carry a premium; weekday scheduling a few days out is cheapest.
- Disposal fees: Rockland's transfer station tipping fees are higher than the national average and are built into every local price.
Reading a quote
A fair Rockland junk quote is a firm number given on site (or from clear photos) before loading, inclusive of labor, hauling and disposal, with any surcharges named. Be wary of a low phone estimate that becomes a different number once the truck is half loaded, and of any company that will not say where the material goes. Insurance matters more than it seems: a crew carrying a fridge down your stairs should be covered if a wall or a worker is hurt.
Questions
Is junk removal cheaper than a dumpster?
For up to about one truckload, usually yes once the dumpster's delivery, rental, weight overage and your own labor are counted. For multi-week renovations, a dumpster wins.
Can I negotiate?
A little. Having everything in one place, on the ground floor or in the garage, and flexible on timing gets you the best price. Getting a second quote is free here.
Is there a minimum charge?
Almost always, about $100 to $200 by 2026 national guides. One mattress and one sofa together cost barely more than one alone.
